Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a tried and tested system of healthcare devised by the Chinese and other Eastern cultures. Acupuncture as practised by members of the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is based on Chinese medicine principles that have been developed, researched and refined for over 2000 years.

What happens?
At your first appointment a detailed medical history will be taken. Your pulse will be taken and assessed from a traditional Chinese medicine view point, and your tongue will be examined. The treatment will involve the insertion of very fine needles into acupuncture points on your body, chosen specifically to treat and disharmonies particular to you as an individual. When the needle is inserted the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Your acupuncturist will discuss with you the number of treatments needed, as this can range from one or two to long-term. All needles used are sterile, single use and disposable.
It is recommended that if you are taking medications that you tell your doctor that you are having acupuncture. You should always tell your acupuncturist if you are taking any medications as this may affect your response to the treatment.

How can it help me?
Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of conditions including: arthritic pain, back pain and sciatica, dental pain, hay fever, IBS, musculo-skeletal, nausea, PMS and severe headaches.

Acupuncture is often used in conjunction with western medicine and can work as a complementary partner to physiotherapy treatment. Treatment can also be directed at more general feelings of ill-health such as tiredness and low energy.

Increasingly women are choosing to have acupuncture to support them throughout pregnancy, labour, after giving birth and later in life during the menopause.

You can get more information about which conditions acupuncture has been used for from www.acupuncture.org.uk . To discuss your condition please feel free to contact our acupuncturist or visit her own website on www.mariannekillick.co.uk
