"It is the mind itself that builds the body"Joseph Pilates, from Schiller.
The pilates program was developed by the late Joseph H. Pilates who began his method around the time of the first world war. It was his goal was to allow each person to realise their physical capabilities and limitations while giving them exercises to correct their muscular imbalances and weaknesses.
Pilates and Physiotherapy
A common element to a person’s physical problem is often identified by physiotherapists as being due to muscular imbalances. This can be due to poor postural habits , stress, repetitive movements at work or whilst playing sports or after injury. This means that some muscles may become weak and lose tone whilst others become tight and shorten.
Pilates is a body-conditioning method, often recommended by Physiotherapists, to help address this imbalance. It is particularly useful for back and neck pain sufferers as they often develop weakness in the deep abdominal and back muscles that prevent them from fully recovering.
The Method
The core of the method is "awareness of your own body" which is also a key aim for physiotherapy. Each exercise taught is built around pilates’ eight key principles:
| • Relaxation | • Alignment |
| • Breathing | • Co-ordination |
| • Concentration | • Centring |
| • Flowing movements | • Stamina |
Australian Physiothearpy and Pilates Institute (APPI)
There are lots of different "brands" of pilates that are taught in the Peterborough area.
It is our belief that Pilates is best taught in a clinical environment where the instructors are Physiotherapists as well and work hand-in-hand with the patients’ therapist so that they understand and work with that individual persons’ problems.
Classes
